# Two magics, five magics

## The stance

We believe in five magics. In reality there are two. The two make the five, and we seek to comprehend
the five from the two.

- **Heart magic** is what a person brings into a world and takes back out: attention, care,
  anticipation, commitment, and being changed by what followed. In the engine it is **Will** —
  attributable authority injected from outside the simulation, never stored, never made on a
  participant's behalf.
- **Mind magic** is what a person builds so that a world can be kept and its consequences worked out.
  **Technology is the mind made manifest**: the recorded Domain, the reducer's typed deltas, the
  computed consequence, the branch that preserves, the history held between visits. The record and
  the engine are not a magic of their own; they are what the mind makes. They remember and compute;
  they do not choose.

Neither is a sixth force. They are the two things that are actually happening whenever the five forces
are read from a record: someone committed, and what someone's mind built kept and derived what followed.

## How two make five

The pentad — World, System, Causality, Fate, Theme — is the **model** by which a kept record becomes
legible. Each force is a way the interaction of heart and mind shows up when read:

| **Causality** connects | what led to what, expressed as flags | the trace the mind keeps of what hearts committed |

Three are stored and two are derived because the mind can store what was there, what governed, and what
was open, while meaning and lineage can only be **read** across the record — and they are read to
understand the hearts that moved it.

## Why a story has more magic than Earth

On Earth the two are pulled apart. The mind remembers without meaning — logs and feeds nobody is changed
by — and the heart commits without anyone keeping what it cost; consequences arrive late, or never, and
the other seat's knowledge stays unknown. Magic is where the two touch: a commitment that is kept and a
consequence computed and returned to the one who made it. A story is where they meet by construction,
because the world is small enough to keep all of it. It is not more magical for being unreal; it is more
magical for being **fully kept**. That is the reason for a training world and a pocket dimension, and the
reason the record must keep everything.

A person who has both — the heart to commit to one thing across every route, and the mind to build what
makes the commitment visible and kept — is the shape of a protagonist in a Meridians world.

## Why it matters for the systems

- **Realism cuts one way.** The five are how we look; the two are what is there. A measure of a force
  (a sign, a weight, a recurrence) is an instrument over the record, never an essence stored apart from
  it ([pentad sign](../../specs/pentad/README.md#pentad-sign)). When a five-force reading conflicts
  with what a person actually committed and what the record actually kept, the record and the
  commitment win.
- **Will stays outside.** Heart magic is not modelled as a force because it is the source of movement,
  not a state of the world. Nothing in the engine commits for a seat; autonomous exploration proposes
  and prices, it never chooses ([AGENTS](../../../AGENTS.md)).
- **The engine is mind, not heart.** Because technology is the mind's manifestation, the record may be
  as capable as it likes at remembering and deriving without ever being mistaken for the thing that
  commits. That is the same boundary as Will-from-outside, stated from the other side.
- **Comprehension is the research programme.** Extracting Causality, calibrating a measure, and reading
  Theme are attempts to understand the five well enough to say something true about the two — what a
  person tended to anticipate, commit, and pay for across worlds ([strategy 12](../product/strategy/12-the-practice-monopoly.md)).
  Such readings stay domain-native and the person's own: no diagnosis, no rank, no verdict
  ([promise](../product/positioning/promise.md)).
- **What we sell follows from it.** A training world is an hour in which heart magic acts and the mind's
  record keeps what it cost; a pocket dimension is a place the record holds between visits so that
  several hearts can return to a history they made ([strategy 01](../product/strategy/01-the-north-star.md)).

One line: **the mind makes the land; the heart is how people grow inside it.** The five are how we read
the ground they meet on.
