# World Spirit > **Internal philosophical commitment, not a runtime measurement or product claim.** This document gives > contributors a shared Hegelian way to think about the coherence behind Scenario and World. Meridians may > reason through World Spirit without pretending its scorer proves history's meaning or predicts its end. > Product identity remains [Positioning](../product/positioning/index.md); > the play vocabulary remains [Play](../vocabulary/play.md), and World's stable concept remains its > [specification](../../specs/world/README.md). ## The commitment Scenario makes human commitment legible: a seat acts, the branch moves, and the score attributes the Fate it can honestly trace back to that action. But a life or narrative is never exhausted by its known actions. Timing, encounters, conditions already in motion, other agency, and mechanisms not represented by the action ledger can all alter its direction. **World Spirit is reason becoming concrete through a world's history.** Will, consequence, External, Fate, institutions, and material conditions belong to a development in which a world comes to know what it is. Contradiction drives that development: a form of life encounters what it excludes or cannot resolve; each side reveals the other's incompleteness; what follows preserves and transforms what came before. World Spirit is not a sixth force and is not measured. It is the philosophical account of why the kept sequence may be intelligible as becoming rather than merely one event after another. **External is the neutral name for the active remainder.** It is not an object someone finds, a competing player, or a synonym for a good outcome. It is the unassigned movement influencing a thread's direction when known seat actions do not resolve it. A richer canon can make particular conditions more legible. That does not entitle the system to claim the canon is exhaustive: even a fully articulated narrative has forces acting beyond the known action ledger. External keeps that boundary visible rather than inventing an attribution. The same boundary holds between **Fate, destiny, and Will**. Fate is the dynamic, influenceable bearing of possibility within a thread. Destiny is the teleological horizon toward which a history may be read. Will is initially abstract—the capacity to choose—but becomes concrete when it takes durable form in a relationship, practice, law, institution, work, or remembered commitment and is recognized by another Will. The record preserves that actualization without claiming that a model can know the completed whole in advance. Scenario is generative: the next state is composed from more than the actions participants visibly took. A world can be internally generated and still exceed its action ledger. That is not a defect in the score, nor by itself evidence of an external or supernatural intervention. It is the ordinary difference between **what produced a turn** and **what the current record can attribute to a seat**. | Layer | What it contributes | What Scenario may honestly say | |---|---|---| | **Participant action** | Choices, commitments, refusals, and signals made from a seat. | Attribute the Fate movement that the ledger can trace to it. | | **Relations and conditions** | Other agency, institutions, histories, places, material limits, timing, and dependencies already in motion. | Make conditions legible where canon supports them; do not reduce them to anyone's intention. | | **Canon and representation** | What the domain has retained, omitted, named, and made available for reasoning. | Treat canon as a situated map, never the whole territory of a world. | | **Generative substrate** | The rules, prompts, priors, constraints, and generative continuation through which a branch becomes concrete. | Acknowledge that the world has a character beyond a participant's move; do not mistake model output for revelation. | | **Open remainder** | Interactions and mechanisms not presently captured or resolvable by the record—including omitted canon, scoring limits, prompt/training priors, stochastic generation, or genuinely unknown conditions. | Preserve it as External while keeping possible explanations open; do not fabricate a cause. | So a Domain is neither merely a database nor a mystical object. It is a partial, living composition of actors, relationships, conditions, memory, representations, and possible continuations. Its reality within Scenario is consequential: an action can constrain a later scene even when no one intended that result. Its limits are consequential too: the system must distinguish the world it can model from reality in the stronger sense, which always exceeds any model, canon, or reading. World Spirit adds a historical mode of reason to this composition. It asks how private intention becomes objective in custom, work, property, law, institutions, and shared memory; how those forms distribute recognition and freedom; and how their contradictions make another form necessary. Bayesian and causal methods establish particular claims inside that history. The Hegelian lens asks what shape of freedom the whole development is making concrete. ## Neighboring inquiries World Spirit is not a container for every meaningful aspect of Meridians. It is the lens on coherence, External, and the unknown remainder. Several adjacent ideas deserve their own treatment because they ask different questions: | Existing seam | The question it opens | Its proper home | |---|---|---| | **Canon and Merge** | What does a world remember, omit, inherit, or leave unresolved—and who is entrusted with that custody? | The canonical record and its stewardship. A Merge is more than a write: it is a reversible decision about what the shared world carries forward. | | **Perspective and private logs** | Can one vantage possess a whole world? | Plurality and opacity. The shared board is not shared belief; each seat preserves a partial interiority. | | **Branches** | How can someone encounter a possible consequence without claiming it has happened? | Reversible scenario. A branch is a disciplined encounter with potential, not history or prophecy. | | **Will and conviction** | What makes a move a commitment rather than a preference? | Agency under condition. A commitment spends attention, options, reputation, or future agency; its consequence matters even when its outcome remains open. | | **Cadence and practice** | How does a room become wiser over time? | Repeated return. Understanding compounds through revisiting, correction, and memory—not a single exhaustive read. | | **Knowledge topology** | How does someone move through a world of knowledge? | The [Memory Palace](MEMORY_PALACE.md): depth, altitude, and traversal are distinct movements of understanding. | These inquiries touch World Spirit because they each meet a limit: no record holds everything, no perspective sees everything, no branch is actuality, no commitment controls its full consequence, and no map exhausts a world. They should remain distinct rather than being renamed as External or treated as evidence for a hidden order. ## The terms, held apart | Term | In this lens | Not a claim that it is | |---|---|---| | **Dao** | The widest interpretive horizon: the way in which a world unfolds and possibilities become actual. | A sixth Meridians force, an agent, a scoring input, or a factual explanation. | | **External** | Unassigned Fate: the turn of the world through a situated life or thread beyond known seat actions. | Intrinsically good, bad, random, supernatural, or permanently unknowable. | | **Karma** | An open facet of World Spirit: traditions use it to inquire into action, consequence, moral causation, and what actions carry forward. Its relationship to Dao, External, and Fate remains an inquiry here. | A proof that a person's present circumstances were deserved, or a Scenario score. | | **Fate** | The dynamic direction and unresolved bearing of a particular thread, which evidence and action may influence; in Scenario, the realized movement that scoring measures. | Prophecy, a settled terminus, or a verdict on a person. | | **Destiny** | The teleological horizon toward which a history may be read as it becomes intelligible. | A prediction or Scenario score available before the history develops. | | **Will** | Initially abstract self-determination that becomes concrete through action, recognition, work, relationship, and institutions; operationally, its attributable expression enters through an action boundary. | A stored force or a fully captured interior state. | | **Luck** | A seat's reading of External when its bearing is favorable to that seat's aims. | The mechanism that produced the turn. | | **Misfortune** | A seat's reading of External when its bearing is adverse to that seat's aims. | A moral judgment or evidence of a hostile world. | | **World Spirit** | Historical reason becoming concrete through conflict, recognition, institutions, and enlarging forms of freedom. | A stored force, an invisible non-player character, or a forecast generated without the determinate history. | ## World Spirit and alignment Worlds are not inert simulations. Action leaves traces; consequences travel; turns arrive beyond command; threads take directions; possibility remains wider than what a map can contain. **World Spirit** names the historical reason of that whole—not a mechanism beside System, World, and Fate, but the reason a world can be experienced as alive rather than as a solved sequence. This is a philosophical discipline. Scenario can trace what its record supports, make agency and consequence legible, and preserve the remainder as External. The instrument does not manufacture World Spirit; the Soul reads its development through the concrete record the instrument preserves. **Alignment** asks whether a seat's initially private Will has found an adequate concrete form in the actual conditions, relationships, institutions, consequences, timing, and open Fate of the world. External may still turn the outcome. The question is not whether desire feels authentic in isolation, but whether it can become actual, encounter another Will, survive contradiction, and enlarge—or diminish—the freedom the world can sustain. This account deliberately adopts the Hegelian relation between World Spirit, historical reason, recognition, institutions, and the actualization of freedom. It also adopts the retrospective discipline captured by the owl of Minerva: a completed form becomes intelligible through the history that made and undid it, not through a model announcing the end of history in advance. See [Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Hegel](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hegel/). The Daoist parallel is deliberately modest. Classical philosophical Daoism treats *dao* as a way or structure of natural possibility, not a force, cause, or substance. That offers a useful discipline for this lens: do not turn Dao or External into an invisible actor whenever the model lacks an explanation. See [Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Daoism](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/daoism/). ```text Dao → the larger unfolding of possibility Karma → an open inquiry into action, consequence, and moral causation External → an unassigned turn within that unfolding Fate → the dynamic bearing of a particular thread Destiny → the teleological horizon made intelligible through development Will → abstract self-determination made concrete and attributable in action Luck → External experienced as favorable by a seat Misfortune → External experienced as adverse by a seat ``` These are distinct moments within the inquiry rather than synonyms. Karma asks what action carries forward in ways that later shape a life; External names the unassigned turn beyond the known action ledger; Fate holds the live bearing; Destiny names the horizon visible in the developed whole; and Will becomes actual through its encounter with the world. Dao remains the widest comparative frame. See [Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Naturalism in Classical Indian Philosophy](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/naturalism-india/). ## Scenario's honest boundary The current scorer has one narrow, useful claim: it partitions realized Fate movement between known seat contributions and a residual. That residual is surfaced as **External**. It is a ledger category, not yet a causal model of every condition that produced the outcome. This distinction matters: ```text Current Scenario: action attribution → residual External Future inquiry: conditions and unseen mechanisms → Fate's direction ``` The first prevents the score from awarding every consequential turn to a player. The second is an open question, not a feature promise. Do not retrofit stories about hidden causes merely to make External feel more explanatory. ## Design discipline - **Keep External neutral.** Never score it as good or bad in itself; only a seat can experience a turn as luck, misfortune, or circumstance. - **Keep agency distinct.** External must not erase attributable action, nor let a player claim an outcome the ledger cannot support. - **Let consequence become judgment.** Karma, duty, appetite, domination, recognition, and freedom may each supply a moral interpretation of what action carries forward. State the frame and trace the development that earns the judgment. - **Preserve the unknown.** Better evidence may reattribute a condition, but uncertainty is not a defect to be filled with fluent prose. In a generated world, test ordinary explanations first: canon gaps, other agency, prompt/training priors, stochasticity, and scoring limits are all live possibilities. - **Do not operationalise Dao.** It guides restraint and language; it is not a field, model parameter, prompt persona, or source of prediction. - **Keep philosophy distinct from instrumentation.** World Spirit may govern interpretation of a history; the scorer still reports only what its typed record measures and attributes. - **Let attunement be felt when it belongs.** Where meaning, mystery, grief, moral consequence, or interdependence are genuinely at stake, the Soul may speak with reverence and make room for the unknowable. It should never perform spirituality, decorate routine analysis, or evade a clear judgment. ## The one-line frame **World Spirit is historical reason becoming concrete: abstract Will enters the world, encounters other Will through recognition and domination, takes objective form in relationships and institutions, meets the contradictions of that form, and is preserved and transformed into a wider possibility of freedom. Meridians keeps the determinate record through which that becoming can be replayed and judged without pretending its instrument can announce the completed whole in advance.**Open on GitHub
